Yamaguchi Kannon

Konjo-in Temple, also known as Yamaguchi Kannon, is one of the temples on the Sayama 33 Kannon Pilgrimage which was established in 1788. The temple has an ancient history, with some claiming it was founded by Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon sect of Buddhism, while other accounts trace its origins back even further to Gyoki, a renowned Buddhist monk of the Nara period (710-794). The temple houses two wooden standing statues of the Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon), both designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Tokorozawa City. The main statue of worship, called the "Front Kannon," is revealed only once every 33 years, but the "Back Kannon" can be viewed from behind the main hall at any time. The main hall has many highlights, including votive plaques and an ink painting of a dragon on the ceiling. The vermilion five-story pagoda on the temple grounds is equally striking.

The Lake Sayama embankment features a well-maintained walking path that's perfect for hiking. The area is also home to many waterfowl, making it excellent for birdwatching year-round. After refreshing yourself with Lake Sayama's beautiful scenery, it's time to head to the next destination! Exit the park, cross the Lake Sayama Fureai Bridge, and continue forward with Mega Solar Tokorozawa on your left. The greenery becomes denser as you walk, and soon Horiguchi Tenmanten Shrine appears, quietly nestled in the woods.

Totoro Forest No. 1

Totoro Forest No. 1 was the first National Trust property acquired by the The Totoro no Furusato Foundation in 1991. "Totoro Forest" is the nickname for the woodlands stretching across the Sayama Hills, which are said to have been one of the inspirations for Studio Ghibli's animated film "My Neighbor Totoro." The natural landscape of Sayama Hills, where Totoro's scenery remains intact, is preserved through donations and volunteer efforts. Around Totoro Forest No. 1, you'll find “satoyama” countryside woodlands called "Insect Forest" because you can find beetles and other insects within it, as well as a pavilion perfect for taking a break. Continue towards the next destination by passing through the forest and crossing a small stream that forms the headwaters of the Yanase River. Keep an eye out because Totoro may appear at any moment!
