Menuma Shodenzan Kangiin Temple

The main hall of Menuma Shodenzan, called "Kangiin Shodendo," was built approximately 840 years ago. After several reconstructions, it became Saitama Prefecture's first National Treasure in 2012. It has no affiliated families (households that are registered with and financially support a temple) and instead relies on donations and support from local residents, making it a beloved community temple since ancient times. Menuma Shodenzan is a power spot for matchmaking and also provides blessings for family safety, business prosperity, protection from misfortune, good luck, traffic safety, and academic success. Kangiin Shodendo showcases the highly decorative temple architecture that flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868), with carvings from the era displayed throughout. The pair of phoenixes in the inner sanctuary were carved by two master craftspeople. Though different in style, both phoenixes are exquisitely detailed and captivate visitors with their beauty. English-speaking guides are available (advance reservation required), so international visitors can visit with peace of mind. Along the approach, you'll find a sushi shop specializing in inari sushi, a dessert shop, and a traditional candy store - definitely worth a visit!

Menuma Roadside Station

Menuma Roadside Station sells souvenirs and processed goods made from fresh, locally grown vegetables. It also has a restaurant serving local specialties and sweets. In summer, try Kumagaya's signature shaved ice "Yukikuma," and in winter, enjoy "Niboto," a regional dish of wide noodles and vegetables simmered in a soy sauce-based broth. The road station’s rose garden showcases approximately 2,000 rose bushes of 400 varieties that bloom in spring and autumn. Enjoy the roses not only in May, but also from late October when the autumn roses bloom. After savoring the local cuisine, take time to appreciate the beauty and fragrance of the colorful roses.

Sakitama Kofun Park

Sakitama Kofun Park is designated as a national Special Historic Site and features nine large burial mounds, including Inariyama Kofun where the National Treasure gold-inlaid iron sword was discovered, and Maruhakayama Kofun, considered one of Japan's largest circular burial mounds. The 115-character inscription on the gold-inlaid iron sword contains a significant archaeological discovery, revealing that royal authority centered in the Kinki region had extended across vast territories by the late 5th century. You can actually climb both Maruhakayama Kofun, which resembles a small hill, and Inariyama Kofun, where the famous gold-inlaid iron sword was found. Experience the mystical energy of the burial grounds that has endured since ancient times firsthand.

Suijo Park & Oshi Castle Ruins

Suijo Park sits in central Gyoda City and was developed around the remaining moats and ponds from the original Oshi Castle. Famous for its cherry blossoms, the park offers a delightful landscape where seasonal flowers blend harmoniously with ponds of varying sizes. Oshi Castle, ranked among the seven main strongholds of Kanto, was constructed in the late 15th century. Once renowned as an impregnable fortress, remnants such as sections of earthwork fortifications still provide glimpses into its storied past. The Oshi Castle Three-Story Turret, relocated and reconstructed in 1988, now houses exhibition rooms for the local history museum and stands about 600 meters northwest of Suijo Park. From the top floor, you can enjoy sweeping views of the city.
