Northern Area
Area Guide
Bordering Gunma Prefecture, Saitama’s northern region once thrived as a trade hub, where the mighty Tone and Arakawa rivers served as natural highways. Today, this understated area harbors a wealth of historical relics, sightseeing attractions, hot springs, and more awaiting adventurous travelers. Brightest among these is the Menuma Shodenzan Kangiin Temple in Kumagaya, which was declared a National Treasure for its extraordinary architecture. The region’s silkworm farming legacy is also honored by the preserved “high-window houses” that dot the rural landscape. Local artisans continue age-old traditions, such as making premium sake, miso, and tofu using pristine spring water. Nature paints spectacular seasonal portraits throughout the year, like delicate plum blossoms gracing the Ogose Plum Grove in spring, and Kamikawa’s winter cherry blossoms.
